Doppler effect or doppler shift is when a source of wave is moving away or towards an observer. As a result the wave frequency is increased or decreased and the amount of change depends on the speed of the moving object. This is the reason that the siren of an emergency vehicle passing us sounds higher as it approaches us and after it passes us it's higher. Another very common instance of it is the so called "Color shift", which astronomers use to find out if a star is approaching or moving away from us. Objects approaching us have so called blueshit to the color and objects moving away have red shift.
